Tradition

Andermatt has been considered a desirable holiday location for more than 100 years. Its unparalleled beauty is obvious but its hidden traditions make it even more beguiling.

Andermatt has always been at the forefront of economic and social change for the Alps. The Gotthard Pass historically links four cultural regions as an essential route North-South through the Alps. This route has economic significance first discovered by the Lombards who conquered the notoriously dangerous Schöllenenschlucht Defile in 569 by setting up a bridge suspended by chains over the Reuss. This was replaced by the people of Uri in 1198 with, the now legendary, Teufelsbrücke (Devil's Bridge). A passage from North-South through the Alps was therefore established, and made ever more strong with the addition of a railway tunnel in 1882.
